5 Reasons To Do An In Home Newborn Photo Session | Salt Lake Family Photographer

In Home Newborn Photo Session

TAI LEE PHOTOGRAPHY | Utah Family PHOTOGRAPHER

Over the years I’ve done LOTS of newborn sessions. And, depending on how long you’ve been following me, you may or may not know that I used to do very posed studio newborn sessions. I’ve gone through a major shift in my business over the years and have fallen in love with the everyday happenings that take place within the walls of our homes. This is where we form connections, where we rock our babies, comfort our children. The walls of our homes see it all. The good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly. Our homes are an extension of us, and where we live out really significant pieces of our stories.

One of the crazy things too, is we think we will remember all of those details. We don’t think we’ll forget what that part of life was like, how tiny our new babies were, or the way our lives looked at that time. But things change, life evolves, and we do forget. Photos help us to remember, and show us how amazing our life was all along.

So let’s get into it! Here are the top 5 reasons I think everyone should consider having their newborn photos taken in their own home.

1 | CONVENIENCE

This is HUGE when you’ve got a new baby. Having a new baby can be really overwhelming. Whether it’s your first or your fourth, making sure you have all the essentials to get through an outing with your newborn is no small feat! If the baby has a blowout, no big deal. Diapers, wipes, and even a bath are close by. Baby needs to eat? You’ve got your couch, room, or whatever you need to feed them as comfortably as possible. Your toddler needs a snack right in the middle of our session? Take a quick trip to the kitchen—easy!

Worried that your house isn’t good enough? Guess what—nobody feels like their house is perfect. I’ve taken photos in homes that still had the tape on the wall from painting, homes that weren’t as decorated as they wanted it to be, had scrapes on the walls, etc.

2 | COMFORT ZONE

One of the most common phrases I hear is how awkward people feel about getting photos taken. Being in your own home, your comfort zone, helps break down some of that discomfort. Toddlers can take a break from photos and go play with their toys (which often turn into really cute photos), dads can go grab a snack, or play with the kids when they need a break.

3 | YOU DON’T HAVE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE

Cute little newborns have cute little immune systems that are still developing and you may not feel ready to take them out into the world yet. This allows you to keep them in the environment you feel is safest for them. Let’s not forget that moms often have their own healing + recovering to do, are typically sleep deprived, and still trying to get into a new routine for her and the baby. Staying in your home is less disruptive to that whole process and is more supportive of your routine. Plus, leaving the house and getting anywhere on time with a newborn should be an olympic sport, so you can throw that worry out the window by just staying home and letting me do all the worrying about getting there on time.

4 | WEATHER

Ever gotten all the way ready for pictures—hair done, clothes all picked out, everyone dressed, fed, etc, only to have to reschedule because it was rainy, snowy, too windy, etc? Mother Nature does her own thing, but you can know that your session is going to go ahead as planned because the weather isn’t something to have to be concerned with. If it’s super stormy it may make your house a little dark inside, but that’s why I have a killer camera that does really well in low light situations.

5 | UNIQUE TO YOU

Lastly, and maybe my favorite reason, is that your photos will be completely personalized to you, because they are taken in the space that you’ve created as an extension of yourself. A reflection of what’s important to you. In the space that all the magic (and non-magic) happens. We work really hard to provide and create a safe place for ourselves and our families to live in. All the time we spend working, cleaning, laundry-ing, cooking—I could go on and on—it’s all for the safety and comfort of ourselves and our families. Photos in your home honor that. They honor you for showing up day in and day out and providing this space for your family. They won’t look like every other family or newborn photo session that you’ve seen. They’ll be uniquely yours.
