You really can get any look you want just depending on how far you are willing to drive. A family photo session can be as simple as creating beautiful images in your own home, and yard, or more of an experience like driving to a beautiful location that is in itself a work of art. Neither one is better than the other, but this post is going to focus on the variety of outdoor photo shoot locations in the Northern Utah area. I’ll save the topic of in-home family photo sessions for another blog post, because those are just as lovely.

Salt Lake City Family Photo Session in Mid-Century Modern Home Renovation
Tai Lee Photography | Utah Family Photographer
A few months ago I was invited into this beautiful family’s home that they had recently remodeled near Salt Lake City, Utah to photograph their love and connection. I could tell that their daughter Isla was the center of their world and the purpose of everything that they worked hard for and that their home was an expression of their creativity, and extension of their inner selves. They did such a beautiful job mixing modern and mid-century to create such cozy spaces to spend their days at home together, and made an effort to bring in lots and lots of natural light. The walls and colors were neutrals mixed with wood and stone, with giant windows everywhere.
A couple of years ago, our family moved to Heber, UT. It was a place we had always wanted to live so we finally just went for it. It’s been a challenge relocating my photography business, but it’s also been SO much fun. I love living in Heber because it allows for me to serve not only Heber, but also the surrounding areas like Park City, Midway, Salt Lake, and Provo. It’s been a ton of fun to location scout for good locations to take family pictures and engagement pictures and I’ve got a list of gorgeous locations up my sleeve. One of my favorite areas in Heber is Wasatch State Park. You get the view of the mountains in the background and this little area with grassy fields and pretty light was the perfect spot this family photo session in the late fall with my friend and her family. Enjoy scrolling through this session with the most adorable kiddos I have possibly ever seen.
P.S. I mixed in a bit of black and white film, so for those of you who appreciate and can see the beauty of film, see if you can pick them out. ;)
Family Photography in Logan, Utah | Photo Session In the Utah Mountains

I met Shelby on Instagram and was so excited to set up a family photo shoot for her. I traveled to Logan, Utah for this family session and we found the coolest spot for pictures near the mountains. If you need a location in Logan for your family pictures, be sure to check out Green Canyon. It’s got a really good variety of scenery and beautiful light a couple of hours before sunset.
Family Session At Home Photographed On Film | Heber, Utah Family Photographer
Tai Lee Photography | Specializing In Artfully Documenting Your Life
Film photography has been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years and I have been sucked into all the hype around it. I actually started out my photography journey shooting on film but it was too unpredictable and not very cost effective. Plus the stress of wondering if you got your exposures right and if the photos turned out was a little overwhelming. I’ve actually hung onto my film camera and have pulled it out for fun to shoot black and white film (my all time favorite) and in the last couple years have started playing with color film.
Family Photo Session at the Sand Dunes | Utah Valley Family Photographer
Tai Lee Photography | Artistic Family Photographer
Malissa has been a good friend of mine for the last several years and when she called me and asked if I wanted to swap family pictures for each other at the sand dunes in Utah, I was ALL IN. There are several sand dunes locations in Utah. One of them is in Eureka at Little Sahara Recreation center, another is the Coral Sand Dunes, and believe it or not, there are some in the Uintah Basin. It is always so fun to photograph another photographer’s family. They come ingrained with what we call insider knowledge ;) and know a few things that are really helpful for their photographer. They have an understanding that family photos can be fun, that they don’t need to stress about yelling at their kids through the whole shoot to get them to behave, and they have a sixth sense for killer locations to do family photos. Utah is full of these outdoor places to take pictures, but the standard is to do fall family pictures and do them in the mountains where the leaves are orange and red. Nothing is wrong with this, and the mountains in Northern Utah in the fall are stunning, but I’ve found that photographers as well as other clients of mine that are creative souls, really love doing something outside of the norm. They like to break tradition a little. Something both Malissa and I have LOVED is taking family photos in the summertime. The light is delicious, and warm, and full of life. So we swapped sessions and I couldn’t be more happy with how both of our photos turned out. Malissa does BEAUTIFUL work on film, and I snuck in a few film shots of her family as well. See if you can pick them out! Check out our family session with Malissa HERE.
Motherhood is … I can’t fill in the blank here because we would be here until the end of time. But it is always such a special type of photo session when you are photographing a mother with her children. Mommy and me sessions can be fun, chaotic, annoying (sometimes our kids just pull out some weird stuff when it’s picture time), and they can also be really magical. It doesn’t always feel like it at the time but with this lifestyle session in this Utah apple orchard really captured the connection and some of the craziness that makes motherhood beautiful. The hammock hanging in the orchard brought in a casual and relaxed vibe and the kids loved lounging in it.
If you’re wondering where you can take family pictures in Utah, an easy way to start looking is to google search Utah State Parks. The reason this is such a good option is because it comes with such a variety of scenery, usually water, mountains, and a variety of landscapes. There is often a fee to do any type of family photography in a state park so that will need looked up for the particular location you are going. However, if you are wanting to avoid the fee, state parks are usually surrounded by a lot of public land that looks very similar to the park and does not require a fee.
I had the honor of documenting this dreamy maternity session of Leah in Saratoga Springs, Utah. The beginning of motherhood is magical, whimsical, and a time of deep reflection. There are so many maternity photo shoot ideas out there ranging from lots of props to keeping it very minimal. I tend to resonate with the minimal, natural, earthy approach. This maternity session implemented soft, pretty florals with a neutral color palette, minimal, earth-toned clothes in a setting with water and tall, soft, yellow grass.
