Two words. VW Van. I was sold. The second I found out about this styled shoot I was ALL in! Springville, Utah is a ways from where I live and consisted of a bit of a drive. Dayne and I loaded the boys up (not sure where our girls spent that day) and headed to Jolley’s Ranch. The boys wandered around the park with their dad, dodging frisbees from disc golf players, while I hung out with a small group of photographers (felt big to introverted-me) and photographed this gorgeous couple. I’ve been trying to branch out in the photography world and have really loved being able to join in on some super cool styled shoots. It’s really important to me to go and meet new people and have a chance to photograph something in the way that I see it. No pressure, no ties. I do try to make an effort to get shots for vendors that I feel like they would be able to use for their portfolios and I also enjoy meeting other photographers and seeing how they work and what gear they shoot with.
I got to the shoot quite early so I could walk around and scope out the light and see where my must-shoot spots were. There were three of them.
1 | Dappled light on the barn. Literally had minutes to get a shot here. Maybe seconds? Whenever you’re doing a shoot next to a mountain you lose your light FAST. And remember, 8 photographers.
2 | The wood pile. I was maybe just a tiny, tiny bit worried a snake or black widow would come sneaking out, but no such event took place. Win.
3 | The bush with the red flowers. For obvious reasons.
What’s awesome is that I was able to get those shots, but I was also able to get shots of other people’s ideas. The flower cookie over the eye for example—not my idea, but when you’re shooting with other photographers you are able to build on each other’s ideas. I loved the cookie idea and wanted to see if I could make it a little more unique by having Ruby reach her hand toward the camera. But I never would have gotten that photo which is one of my favorites without someone having the idea to bring one of the cookies into the shot. And those cookies with the flowers pressed into them were so cool. See the list of vendors below that were able to help make this shoot so dang cool.
