Let’s be clear, Utah is in no shortage of really epic and beautiful locations to take your family photos. The best thing about Utah and it’s scenery is that is is so diverse. You really can get any look you want just depending on how far you are willing to drive. A family photo session can be as simple as creating beautiful images in your own home, and yard, or more of an experience like driving to a beautiful location that is in itself a work of art. Neither one is better than the other, but this post is going to focus on the variety of outdoor photo shoot locations in the Northern Utah area. I’ll save the topic of in-home family photo sessions for another blog post, because those are just as lovely.

Imagine being so far away from everything that you only hear the still, quiet sound of nature. The sound of the breeze, the rustle of desert plants, the breath of the earth. The word Amangiri means ‘peaceful mountain’ and that is exactly how it felt to be there. Not only while exploring the steep cliffs, canyons, mesas, white slot canyons, and rock formations, but also while wandering through the Amangiri Resort, with its architecture and design that honors and complements the nature surrounding it. Instead of competing with nature, it became one with it and it truly does feel like you are in the wild west. I loved collaborating in Sundace, Utah at the Timpanogas Trailhead with fellow creative Katie Bushnell from Havenwood. She did such a beautiful job at taking the little bit of inspiration I sent her and really bringing it to life with her fine art wedding styling. This is exactly what a wedding stylist does. It’s easy to pin all the pretty pictures to Pinterest but it’s an entirely different thing to know how to bring it all together and have it look pretty and balanced. It’s overwhelming to look at all the different wedding table decorations and centerpieces, and even if you do find the right ones, arranging them takes a trained, creative eye.

Motherhood is … I can’t fill in the blank here because we would be here until the end of time. But it is always such a special type of photo session when you are photographing a mother with her children. Mommy and me sessions can be fun, chaotic, annoying (sometimes our kids just pull out some weird stuff when it’s picture time), and they can also be really magical. It doesn’t always feel like it at the time but with this lifestyle session in this Utah apple orchard really captured the connection and some of the craziness that makes motherhood beautiful. The hammock hanging in the orchard brought in a casual and relaxed vibe and the kids loved lounging in it.

The reason this is such a good option is because it comes with such a variety of scenery, usually water, mountains, and a variety of landscapes. There is often a fee to do any type of family photography in a state park so that will need looked up for the particular location you are going. However, if you are wanting to avoid the fee, state parks are usually surrounded by a lot of public land that looks very similar to the park and does not require a fee.

A dreamy winter mountain engagement session and picnic. What more could you ask for. I had the honor of working with Ani + Todd last winter for this session in the Utah mountains for this snowy couple photoshoot. I also had the honor or working with Katie Bushell of Havenwood House who style this GORGEOUS winter picnic for their shoot. Megan Dunford from Persimmon floral provided the neutral bouquets to add the perfect touch of warmth to the earthy tones of the picnic set. It was intimate, and romantic, and we had the whole place to ourselves.
