Family PHOTOS at the Salt Flats WITH FILM PHOTOGRAPHY AESTHETIC USING 35 MM FILM

If you did a quick online search for places to take pictures in Utah, or Utah photography locations, the Bonneville Salt Flats is definitely going to show up as one of the top locations. I just don’t think I will ever get sick of this location. It has got the most perfect fine-art feel, that is simple, minimalistic, and a touch modern, but with a feel of earthiness. The colors are soft and neutral, which makes it really easy to choose what to wear for your family pictures because it almost acts as a blank canvas for you to curate a wardrobe that has the clothes and colors to wear for your family photoshoot. This family went for more of a neutral theme with their outfits and brought in soft yellows, pinks, greens, greys, and browns, that gave an almost monochromatic look, elevating the styling with some added texture and accessories—even the dogs fur matched! ;) Ps, if you are wondering if you can bring your dogs to your photo session, the answer is a heck yes!

One thing I really love to do when photographing families, couples, and weddings, is to integrate a little bit of film aesthetic to your family photography session. I always add just a touch of film grain to the digital photographs, and we also shot on some 35mm film to bring in the film style with actual film. I love the way the film and digital complement each other, and the Salt Flats is one of my favorite places to shoot on this particular film. See if you can pick out the film photos. They are the ones with a wash of pink that paints across the film so perfectly. Also, pro tip—if you are wanting beach film photography for your family, engagements, or bridals, this film with light leaks would be straight up MAGIC.

The afternoon that we shot these photos the weather was AWFUL! It was a little chilly, but the wind was really showing off, and it was biting cold. I really didn’t want to cancel because it was just looking to get colder, and it was a little tricky to get our schedules to match up. We decided to go for it, and I am so glad we did! What we ended up doing was shooting in 10-15 increments, with 10-15 minute breaks in the car to warm up. One thing that really made this go smoothly, is that Emily really wanted natural, and authentic photos with a documentary style to them, of them just playing and being together. She didn’t want perfection, and wanted those real, candid moments, so I wasn’t as worried that they may not like it if the wind was blowing their hair in their faces, and that that would actually elevate the photos even more. These cute little kiddos were troopers, and I’m mad impressed with them because I can’t even convey how chilly it was. And I was wearing a winter hat and a coat. Oh, one other trick we used, was we had the kids sit on a side of the car so that the car helped block the wind. I really loved to see the connection and playfulness these guys all had together, and as always, it is so amazing to me to be able to see just a little piece of your lives, and highlight you with your favorite people in your favorite places.
