A few months ago I was invited into this beautiful family’s home that they had recently remodeled near Salt Lake City, Utah to photograph their love and connection. I could tell that their daughter Isla was the center of their world and the purpose of everything that they worked hard for and that their home was an expression of their creativity, and extension of their inner selves. They did such a beautiful job mixing modern and mid-century to create such cozy spaces to spend their days at home together, and made an effort to bring in lots and lots of natural light. The walls and colors were neutrals mixed with wood and stone, with giant windows everywhere. The entryway immediately spoke to me and had such a pretty mixture of light and shadow and the original rock flooring. It actually used to be outdoor but they enclosed it into an interior space. Their dog Penny meandered into and out of the photos, they snuggled and played with Isla, we pulled out the instax instant film camera and let Isla have some turns with it, and we ended our shoot with them turning on the record playing and dancing together. These moments are so brief, and the photographs that tell these stories only capture the tiniest bit of the beauty in the day to day focusing on connection with family and the lives we design. Creativity goes WAY beyond the type of stuff you create in art class. Our love and daily experiences, the spaces we curate, it’s all creative. It was a pleasure to spend some time with this family documenting their lives through photographs that were more than just a representation of their faces.
