Day In The Life Photo Session Photographed On Film

Utah Valley Family and Wedding Film Photographer

I can’t imagine a more fun way to spend my day than in someone’s home photographing their family. Add in some 35 mm film, (I used fuji 400, and portra 400), and you’ve got the perfect scenario for creating a family film photography aesthetic. I offered to babysit my niece’s kids and took a little trip to Ogden (just North of Salt Lake City) so she could get out and have a little break, and snuck my old Nikon D80 along to surprise her with some photos of her kids. She has got THE MOST adorable kids with their cute little chipmunk cheeks and beautiful eyes. I also LOVE her style and how she has curated her home. It is such a cool, creative extension of who they are as a family and I feel like their home represents them so well. So I snuck into the kids closets and found some neutral outfits and went to work. I gently guided the kids but also let them lead the shoot a bit to get some really cute authentic photos of them that were candid, and natural, but also thoughtfully composed. As usual, I mixed some digital photos in with the film photos. Try and see if you can pick out the film shots!

There is something really unique about film photography that just gives such a fine-art feel to your family photos. They preserve light in a way that digital cameras just aren’t capable of, so that alone gives it such a unique look. There is a nostalgia in some of the grit of the film, and an imperfection that comes along with the photos that feels like a breath of fresh air in a world that feels overly curated and too perfect. With film, you can literally take a photo of the most random things and it brings beauty in unexpected places. I 10/10 recommend adding some film or polaroids to your family photo session collection.

One thing I want to emphasize—a lot of people don’t think their house is good enough, cute enough, clean enough to have photos taken in it. Really all you need is to have some good windows and the shoot can be focused around the areas where there is pretty light. A perfectly clean house is not necessary! You also likely have some neutral outfits you could wear so you wouldn’t even need to buy new outfits for the shoot (think greys, tans, browns, olive green, navy blue, white).
